A steel point (with flats for tightening) that is attached to one end of the DCP and driven into low strength soils. The angle of the point is 60 degrees and the diameter of the base of the point is 0.790 inches. The point is larger than that of the rod to ensure that the resistance to penetration is exerted on the point, and not skin friction on the rod. Use in hard or cohesive soils may increase difficulty of extraction of the instrument at the conclusion of the test.
